Psalm 119:13

With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. Psalm 119:13

What a sweet reminder from the Psalmist, on those days of melancholy. I can repeat back to God all that He says about Himself and who He says that I am.

I can pray the prayers of the Bible. I can lament the laments; I can worship with the worship Psalms. I can meditate on His Word, having it move deeper in my heart. I can declare with my lips all the rules of God’s Word as the Holy Spirit make my heart believe.

“Lord, I believe, help my unbelief!” Mark 9:24 ESV

This scripture does not pretend to say that I know “all the rules of your mouth.” It does not pretend to say all that comes out of my lips are Biblical. The Psalmist is more expressing the want, desire, longing, confession, and contriteness that all of God’s rules would be declared with his lips; one day.

As fallen, broken humans directly affected by the Fall of Man in Genesis 3, we cannot read this verse to imply the pursuit of picture-perfect perfection (on this side of eternity). No, that would not be an unrealistic expectation of an all loving, all perfect God who sees His children as struggling toddlers progressing in sanctification.

This verse declares a day in eternity when all things are known and that “With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth.” On that day, all things will be revealed. But until that day, I will pray that my heart will continue to be trained on all the rules of God. I will strive to know, love, remember, and see God in every aspect of life. I will search for His Redemption in all things, and I will lift my voice to declare all that has been shown to me, to His glory.
