Psalm 119:15

I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. Psalm 119:15

According to Hebrew scholars ‘precepts’ are defined as “the particular guidelines for the redeemed” while ‘ways’ mean the “path of life delineated for the redeemed.”

So, the psalmist is saying, “I will fix my mind on meditation, and I will fix my eyes on the path of life.” It is not just learning more of the right things; it is also walking in the right ways. It is both lecture and lab.

We know that knowledge puffs up (1 Corinthians 8:1) so the Word of God must be more than learning, more than reading and hearing. When we meditate, we are digesting God’s Word into our heart. This creates a nourishment that is both satisfying in the moment but also sustaining for the future.

As we move forward in the areas that God has called us into, we fix our sights on what He is doing. We follow His path. We “lean not on our own understanding.” He “will make our paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

When I was younger, I had the painful realization that the seeds that I planted in my twenties came up in the thirties; and it was bad. I learned that my flesh is a bad decision-maker, and I needed Someone else’s plan for my life. In general, that is my testimony. And God is faithful…

So today, I read Psalm 119:15 and I realize that this is the sure way. This is the next right thing to do. This is a universal truth that everyone needs to grasp. “…meditate on Your precepts and fix my eyes on Your way.”

Every day, before any activity is started, before I meet any event of the day, I want God to orient me under this truth. Like Joshua going into battle, first God must go before him. So I must start each day mediating on God’s Word and fixing my eyes on Him, “the author and perfector of my faith” (Hebrews 12:2).
