Psalm 119:35

Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it. Psalm 119:35

I was reminded of this today when I read David Powlison’s “Take Heart, Devotions to Deepen Your Faith.”

“We tend to be a busy, noisy, distractible people in a busy, noisy, distracting world. This psalm (Psalm 119) teaches us to say, “I need time to listen and think if I am even to converse with God.” (p.10)

Here we read an example of the Psalmist speaking truth back to God. The psalmist is simply taking the truth of Scripture and repeating it back to the author of Scripture with delight. Is there a better way to pray then to repeat back to God the truth of what He says, with a heart of delight?

The Psalmist subtly implies a need for help. “Lead me in the path of your commandments…” These words are  another way of saying, “I need your leadership here.”

  • Who knows this path best? God! He is the author of the commandments.

  • What does this look like? It looks like the way of Jesus.

  • Why is leadership needed? I need God’s leadership to stay on the path.

  • When do I need this? Today, every day, every hour, every minute.

  • Where do I find the path? I find it in His commandments.

How do I do this? Through the power of the Holy Spirit in me as one who has put their faith in Jesus.

Because I can be distracted so easily, I need God’s guidance and direction day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute.

Hebrews 2:1 says, “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.”

God has provided “the way, the truth, and the life” through His Son Jesus. If we are to delight in Him and the life He has supplied each of us (individually) until His return, we must follow His leadership.

God, teach me to delight in you. And teach me see the ways that You delight in me, a lowly sinner, suffering saint. I need you on my worst day and I need you on my best day. I need you when I am dealing with shame, and I need you when acting out the pride in my heart. Come Lord Jesus, “lead me in your ways everlasting.” Amen.

Application Questions:

  1. When are times that I am led by fear of man and not fear of God?

  2. Where are the times that I demand something, wanting “what I want, when I want it?”

  3. What are ways I can practice taking off pride and putting on humility?
