Psalm 119:52

When I think of your rules of old, I take comfort, O LORD. Psalm 119:52

Envision, if you will… Picture a well-principled father, holding his infant child. He has the child in his arms, gently rocking them while humming a soft, sweet lullaby tune. His eyes are focused on the child, taking in every movement the child makes.

He walks in a circular pattern, softly and smoothly. Nothing is out of rhythm or jerky. Everything is peaceful, light, gentle yet sturdy and protective all at the same time.

The child is comfortably swaddled in a soft warm blanket exactly proper to the temperature of the room.

The father quietly begins to talk to the child, eye to eye. He begins to speak about the child to the child, telling stories about the child’s family and how wonderful of a family the child belongs to. He speaks of the love there is for one another in this family. The story goes on and on and on.

When I think of your rules of old, I take comfort, O LORD. — Psalm 119:52 ESV

When I think about how God, our Father, loves us, I think about that young father described above speaking to me. Sometimes when laying down to sleep, before going to sleep, I create a word picture in my mind like the story above.

I ask God to tell me the story about Noah and the great flood one more time. Sometimes I ask Jesus to tell me the story about him feeding the five thousand, one more time. I ask God to tell me more about His family, which is my family (the church). I ask Jesus to tell me the story of the sermon on the mount, one more time. I ask God to remind me how our family is to act again (the Beatitudes).

I love these family stories and I love to think about being in the arms of my Father. And I also love the attention of my older brother, Jesus, reminding me of all he taught when he was here on earth.

I also love that through faith in Jesus Christ, you are part of the family of God too. I would encourage you to abide in the Father and enjoy the Son for the good of the family of God.

If these ideas are new to you and you do not have this type of relationship with Jesus, please consider reaching out to the Burke Care team to discuss in more detail. If you are a child of God, your family is missing your presence.

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are… (1 John 3:1a).

For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. (Hebrews 8:29).

Amen!

Application Questions:

  1. What do you think about your perfect Father in heaven gently swaddling you and holding you in His arms?

  2. A word for resting in God is “abide.” Is the idea of abiding something you struggle with?

  3. Have you ever thought about Jesus being your older brother? How does that make you feel?
