Psalm 119:61

Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget your law. Psalm 119:61

Ah, now we see what was so urgent and hastening for the Psalmist in the prior verse. There are the wicked cords of others ensnaring him. And he doubles down on his need for God’s law to prevail.

“Though the cords of the wicked…” The Psalmist does find himself in peril and needs God’s presence to calm his heart and secure his feet.

“…ensnare me…” Even though he feels the cords ensnaring him, the Psalmist looks to God’s character, promises, and law to bring freedom. He may feel the bondage creeping in, he knows the bondage will not last forever. God will provide safety and redemption.

“…I do not forget your law.” The Psalmist knows that true safety and security from evil lies in the law of God. He knows his circumstances may be heavy and dark, but as a child of God, his relationship with God is secure because of who God is and who God says he is.

Often, we see the circumstances of our lives and feel like they will overwhelm us, and hopelessness begins to take root.

As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
— Hebrews 3:15

Look again at these verses again. Real “cords of the wicked” are coiling around the Psalmist. And he turns to God’s commandments in haste and without delay in the prior verse, where he not only refuses to forget God’s law, but is also actively works to bring it into his memory as application in the moment. It requires intense focus and intentionality to stay fixed on what God says about a situation when the whirlpool of life is swirling around us. This is faith. This is an act of worship, even if it does not feel like it.

Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is moving forward despite the fear. The Psalmist is courageously walking by faith in this moment.

The Burke Care team would love to unpack this and other scripture with you. Book a session today to better know how to response to the trails you find surrounding you today.

Father, remind me each day to walk by faith and not by sight. For You are the rock on which I place my hope. Amen!

Application Questions:

  1. When are times that I find myself lacking courage to move towards God?

  2. When are the times that I tend to run to my own self-will to do things in my life?

  3. Where do I seek other voices instead of listening to God’s Word?
