Psalm 119:72

The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces. Psalm 119:72

It has been said that Psalm 119 is the longest me to God conversation in the Bible. It is 176 verses of the Psalmist talking directly to God. What the Psalmist is saying is already found in other places in Scripture. It is a style of writing that the Bible writers were taught. It is also an amazing way to pray prayers back to God. Reciting Scripture back to God in prayer is something we should all become familiar with.

Multiplication is something that God loves to do. Not only was Adam told to subdue the earth and multiply as early as Genesis 1.

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” - Genesis 1:28 ESV

Then again, he gave these instructions to Noah and his three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth - Genesis 9:1 ESV

Then the angel of the LORD called Abraham from heaven and said,

I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, - Genesis 22:17 ESV

So how do you think God wants to provide for this increase? The answer would be to follow Him and to say to God, I want to experience the benefits of “the law of your mouth.” Connecting these two thoughts, can you see how the desire for God to multiply is better than “thousands of gold and silver pieces?” Can you see how multiplying God’s redemptive plan for eternity is better than gold and silver coins on your pocket today?

It is one thing to be on the team that has coins, it is another thing to be on the team that is multiplying coins. God is an abundant God. But we do not always see things that way. We tend to see scarcity. We tend to be fearful that we are not enough. We tend to get angry when we perceive someone getting more than us. We live as if God is not dependable, and that God does not see after our good.

Satan is constanty telling us that we are not enough. Yet God is granting us new mercies every morning. What will it take for us to see God moving in our lives, for His glory and our good. What if you stopped asking “Why God?”

What if you started asking God what does He want you to know about your situation? What if you asked him to allow you to see your circumstances as He sees them? Then ask Him, “What do you want me to do?” I would encourage you to spend time this month listening with the ears of your heart and ask God, “What do You want me to know?”

Burke Care is here to help, if you would like someone to walk alongside you as you ask God these questions.

God, You know me better than I know myself. Teach me how holding Your law in my heart is better and putting more money in my pocket. Teach me where You want to multiply my efforts to Your glory. Teach me what You have for me in Your Kingdom today. To Your glory, honor, and praise, Amen.

Application Questions:

  1. Is it scary for you to think about God multiplying your talents and efforts for His glory?

  2. What are you holding back from God that might be causing you to keep Him at a distance?

  3. What would it look like for you to begin seeing your surroundings through the eyes of your heart (and being less analytical about things)?
