Northern Iowa Skies

This is a poem I wrote prior to becoming a Christian. I often think about this poem and the way it represents the struggles that were going on inside of me prior to coming to know Jesus as my LORD and Savior. I hope you enjoy…

Under the Northern Iowa skies
We both live our lives.
Doing the things we know best.

We long to live our lives
And not know the divide
That comes from life, inside and out

The search is for the soul
The life yet foretold
The life of the young but old
Wise

Under the Northern Iowa skies
We both live out lies.
In questioning too much we lose it all.

We learn to let go
And to give from within
To push our life from our soul
To make sense of the whole

We cry out in fear
And shed a hard cold tear
Letting go to find
What is really mine?

Can I be me?
Under Northern Iowa skies.
Can I quit the lie?
Can I die, to be free?

Love’s not the point
Success or the rest
I am looking to be me
And I cannot yet make it so.
