Psalm 119:33

Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. Psalm 119:33

Humility is an area where  I continue to struggle. When I was growing up there was so much pride that surrounded me.  Much of it was pride rooted in the fact that we had nothing, so we acted like we were better than others to keep them from seeing our lack. It was such a broken view of life.

Psalm 119:32 points me in the opposite direction. This verse shows me that humility is how I learn the way of Jesus and He will keep it true to the end.

I was not a follower of Jesus Christ until my mid-thirties, so my young adult life was all about walking in arrogance, control, and ignorance.  Of course, at the time, I thought I was brilliant. Looking back, I struggled with humility because I refused to take my pride off and accept God’s plan for my life. I was self-focused, self-absorbed, and self-willed. Eventually, my life literally fell apart. But God is faithful…

God was faithful to show me His way as to how life worked. Because of my lack of biblical understanding, I thought God would show me signs and direct me through a series of rituals and/or practices. I remember thinking God would show me something mystically. While He could have chosen to do that, I now know that God’s primary way of revealing Himself is through His Word.  I learned that putting my faith and hope in Jesus alone was the only way forward for me.

Finally, this verse concludes with the eternal promise that this is true “to the end.” God has His way for me in this life and in the next.  He has secured my inheritance in eternity. Keeping His way to the end is found in His statutes and my response is to humbly finish well.

No matter where your story has taken you.  No matter what your past has been like. God’s way, found in His statutes, is the only way to everlasting joy.  Please consider this today. Even if you do not know what God’s statutes are or even where to find them, consider humbly asking Jesus to show Himself to you.  He is the way, the truth, and the life. (John 14:6)
