Psalm 119:66

Teach me good judgement and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments. Psalm 119:66

“Teach me…” I would say that I consider myself a lifelong learner. I read multiple books at the same time. Daily I am reading my Bible, few devotionals, a book on God’s attributes and a book on suffering. While I am not a great reader (I have minor tracking issues to overcome), I will say that God blessed me with the ability to learn how to learn. I did not go to kindergarten but started first grade at 5. In sports I was usually the youngest participant. I started in music late in the year and had to play catch up. I taught myself mainframe assembler programming after college. I finished my Biblical Counseling seminary classes in my late fifty’s. Being where I am today is a testimony to God’s faithfulness.

“…good judgement and knowledge…” I did not become a Christian until my mid-thirties and how I longed to learn good judgement and knowledge. My maturity as a Christian is learning to take off the old and put on the new. I did not know what wisdom was. I did not know how to make good decisions. I remember realizing the sobering truth as an adult that, “I am not a good decision maker!”

“…for I believe in your commandments.” As I have grown in my relationship with Jesus, I have come to realize that God’s Word is the only thing on which I can truly rely. Please understand, I love the people God has put in my life. But they are just as fallen and broken as I am. I need God’s commandments in my life to navigate this world around me. I believe I can go on because of what God says about Himself, not because of abilities I have.

My daily prayer is something like this:

Teach me God because I did not learn what I needed to as a young person. Feed my mind and heart with all the good judgement and knowledge found in Your Word. I love your commands, yet I struggle to implement them every day. Reveal Yourself to me, teach my brain to understand and reorder my heart so that I obey. Make Your desires my desires.

I would encourage you, the reader, to consider reading Psalm 119 on a regular basis. I would encourage you, to start the journey of hearing from God’s Word and talking back to God. And as you hear yourself talking to God, commit to changing something about your life. I would ask you to consider putting a question mark by every worldly thought and saying that runs through your mind and mouth.

Put a question mark next to it. And consider what God says about that thing. Consider practicing taking off the old, worldly stance and putting on God’s commands, statutes, sayings, precepts, and truth. My testimony is “God is faithful.” I am confident that He will be faithful in your life too.
