Psalm 119:65

You have dealt well with your servant, O LORD, according to your word. Psalm 119:65

I have received so much grace in my life that I cannot even begin to put it into words. God’s grace has not only “dealt well” with me, but it has also saved my life, changed my life, and is my life.

“You have dealt well…” The Psalmist is recognizing that his life is different because of all that God has done and is doing. Gratitude is seeping into his mind as he remembers where he has been and where he is now.

“…with your servant, O LORD,” He rightly refers to himself as a lowly servant of God. These are humble words that come out of a humble posture of the heart. He does not think too highly of himself as Psalm 131 says…

O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore. -- Psalm 131 ESV

“…according to your word.” The Psalmist points back Scripture. Where is truth found? It is found in the Word of God. How does God reveal Himself to us? Through His Word. Where do we learn of this grace that we so desperately need? Through reading the Bible.

My learning style has been more rooted in “caught vs. taught.” I do learn by listening, reading, and studying but it takes me a long time. I guess you could say, I am a slow learner. But if I really want to learn something quickly, I need tasks to get my hands dirty. That is how I learn best and really learn how to apply this new learning.

This is true of how God teaches us. He does provide His wisdom throughout scripture, and he provides gifted teachers to teach His Word. But eventually, we are going to have to grapple with patience and humility. It is not enough to understand these things, we need to be able to put them into practice in our life. This is when real learning takes place. James says we need to not only be a “hearer of the Word but a doer of the Word.”

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. — James 1:23 ESV

Application Questions:

  1. Am I the person who knows more about what God says but do not apply it?

  2. How can I apply the truth of God in my life if I do not read my Bible on a regular basis?

  3. Do I really know the God of the Bible, or have I formed my opinion about God based on others?
