Psalm 119:79
Let those who fear you turn to me, that they may know your testimonies. Psalm 119:79
One can almost feel the shift in the psalmist’s confidence.
“Let those who fear you turn to me,” The psalmist is seeking community with those who fear God. He wants those who walk in the fear of God to approach him and come to him. He wants life to be done in community, and he is wanting to do life with others who have a healthy fear of God.
“…that they may know your testimonies.” He clarifies that this desire is not for selfish reasons but to bring glory to God. The mission of the gospel is for God to be known. The psalmist wants God to reveal Himself to all His children in preparation of Jesus’ return at the wedding feast of the lamb (Revelation).
Even here in the Old Testament book of Psalms we see the shadows of the gospel. We see an evangelistic foreshadowing of Jesus’ return. And the fear of God is an inward heart of faith and not just an outward performance under the law.
For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God. – Romans 2:28-29 ESV
The psalmist wants relationship with others as he walks in faith following the testimonies of God. It is as if the psalmist is picking up the pace in his walk and his dialogue with God.
For this is the will of God, your sanctification… -- 1 Thessalonians 4:3 ESV
We see the psalmist’s progressive sanctification continue as he reaches the middle of his on-going conversation with God.
