Psalm 119:9
How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to you word. Psalm 119:9
While there are many “special” verses contained in the 176 total verses of Psalm 119, I believe this to be the first and possible the main idea of the entire chapter. There are more “special” verses to come that are equally strong and unique but this is the first that should catch our attention.
This verse is pointing to exactly why men today should “delight” in reading Psalm 119 on a regular basis while being intentional to study its wisdom. Psalm 119 was used to teach the Hebrew children the Hebrew alphabet but more importantly it was teaching the Hebrew children the foundational truth of the Jewish faith.
I believe it has much to teach men about that basics of the Christian faith through the revealed Word of God. It not only encourages us to read the Bible (and “delight in the Word) but It also teaches us today how to relation to and be in communion with our Perfect Father.
When we learn how to hear from and speak to our Perfect Father in heaven then and only then does a believer begin to learn how to “keep his way pure”. The psalmist does not give us a complex, difficult list of things to do. Part of life is to make our way. But a life which has guardrails defined by the Word of God is the purest way to go.
Jesus said He is the way, the truth, and the life. This verse is pointing us to Jesus. Not only is Jesus the pure way, He is also the Truth that guides us along the way and He is the life that we are being conformed to as we mature and are being sanctified along the way.
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
